Alisha and KP were so very wonderful last week when I asked if I could show up for this sweet six month old girlie's session last Friday with my husband in tow... he came along to shoot "behind the scenes" video for me (would you believe my husband Evan has never, in 18 years of my business - and 16 yrs of marriage - before this day seen me in action at a client's baby photoshoot?) - but these mamas were just so very sweet to let me bring Ev to their session and have him help me tell the story of how I do what I do.
Here's the video we made:
Can't quite express to you how happy being indoors at photoshoots is making me these days...
Because just LOOK at this sweet girl...
She had such fun with her pup... and of course had to stiff-arm Baba while they were having some snuggles...
And, my fave - probably the stuff I've missed the most this year as I've been shooting exclusively outdoors...
Playing On The Big Bed!
It really is just such special, intimate time when families invite me into their space and let me document that playtime with their wee one...
It melts me.
(And OMG Cora the pup and her full-on attack of the toy here? Perfect.)
And there's nothing in the world like a tootsies shot.
And then Alisha had the most creative idea for storytelling, and I was soooo excited about it.
KP talked about how vivid her memories are of her mom styling her hair, and how much it means to her to watch Alisha style their daughter's hair... so I was all in on this creative idea!
Then we went to the living room for some more playful stuff, now that the hair was all perf... I love this tip-over-backwards shot the mostest...
And the smooching Baba picture also totally does me in.
A few little posed-on-the-chair shots, of course...
Which led us naturally to snap a few reading photos... you know how much I love a reading shot, and when that reading can be from a book that matters?
That's the stuff, right there.
Little Leaders, Bold Women In Black History - what a great one! Rachel Nance Wade mentioned that book series when I interviewed her about Talking With Your Kids About Race in my Boston Families Together group a few weeks ago. Rachel's other book recommendations are here.
And last but not least... we were able to zip outside for a few minutes at the end of the session - always my favorite way to do it. A quick zip outside at the end!
Because scenery is purty...
but babies, I always say...
are more comfortable indoors for that first year. But it's fantastic when we can slip outside for a few shots because yes, scenery IS purty!! Agreed! And flowers are fun.
Happy Spring! Happy Vaccines! I'm so grateful to be fully vaccinated and able to go back inside families' homes again. Interested in considering a session? My pricing page is here.
Interested in considering a maternity or new baby photoshoot?
My calendar's posted online here - let me know if you see a time/date that works for your family.
Not sure if you want to do photos at all?
I get that. Even if you aren't in the market for photography right now, if the whole "having a new baby in your house" thing is happening, I just launched a new VIP Facebook Group and I would just ADORE it if you'd come hang out with me in there!
My new group is called Year One Together.
It's for new parents who are getting excited about or already navigating their baby's first year here in the Boston area. I interview local experts in all things baby every other Wednesday, and then those interviews are saved in the group archive so you can watch them anytime. Topics the experts are covering in their interviews with me will include: "Sensory Play Ideas for Babies", "Do I want a Doula? A Midwife?", "Postpartum: The Emotional Side", "Year One With Twins"... and so much more.
Don't have a baby in your house right now, but you live in the Boston area and want a fun online community of families to connect with? Come join my group for families with older children - it's called Boston Families Together and you can join that group here.
I'm Jessica McDaniel, and May 2021 will mark my 18th anniversary photographing babies and their families all around Boston.
