This sweet five week old little love enjoyed some outside time with her big 22 month old sister on Sunday. Usually I'm a strict "everybody will be happier indoors for our first year of photos" photographer, but Coronavirus-times necessitate changes. And babies keep growing, so...
Social Distancing Outdoor Minishoots for Newborns
...are a thing I offer now. (More info is here. And I made a video all about them, too. That's here.)
And honestly, I'm super-duper in love with them.
They're super fast - I kid you not. I was back in my car driving away from this session 40 minutes after I arrived.
The weather was mild, the wind was manageable, and my zooooom lens made it all possible.
Just because this girl came into the world in the midst of a pandemic, that doesn't mean she doesn't get newborn photos!
Teenie caveat, though. That the only reason I am able to do these so efficiently has to do with the fact that I've been photographing newborns for 17 years indoors. And I've been photographing families in minishoots outdoors for the last 17 years as well. And these two things together? That's what makes these successful. Because they're hard. There are 1,000 moving parts to consider.
But they're so worth it!

When I showed up at their home this weekend I was so excited to see their barn! What a cool building! We had to make sure it was part of some of the photos.
(Also, note the bottom left photo below where little new babe Miss L is completely breaking down. Cracks me up.)
It's hard to do the closeups of babies outdoors, guys. It's hard for them to be comfortable outside, no matter how mild the weather.
That's why working quickly is the key to this whole Social Distancing Outdoor Newborn Minishoot thing.
Experience - knowing what to do and how to get it done quickly - that's how to do this. Taking a tiny baby outdoors? You want to do that as briefly as you possibly can. But you want to get all the great photos to tell the story of right now.

Big sister, of course, as she nears her 2nd birthday later this summer, needs to have some time to shine as well...
But then I almost melted when mama pulled out this incredible jacket. Come ON now. Too much. Just fabulous.
Big sister to the rescue!
It was truly perfect seeing you guys on Sunday, thank you for having me out!
Considering a session for your newborn? Curious about pricing?
You know what? Just because you had your baby in a pandemic, it doesn't mean nothing good comes out of it. I've decided to offer minishoot pricing for these newborn sessions, even though sometimes we spend 25, 30, even 40 minutes in your yard (including setup/planning/walkaround/brainstorm time). So these newborn sessions cost the same as all my Social Distancing Outdoor Minishoots: they're $275 for the session.
Families often ask: "How many photos do I get for that $275?"
I think it's my job to create a gallery of photos you WANT to buy from me. So I watermark my galleries (my minishoots result in 25-40 final, "frame-worthy" watermarked images) and then families can decide what they want to order afterwards.
Some families choose to buy prints or products (my print prices range from $18-$36 for my mounted prints) of their favorite photos after their minishoot.
Some families buy individual JPG files for just a few photos at a rate of $75 each after their session.
But to be honest, most families choose to pay $500 after their session to buy the rights to all their high res JPG files after one of my minishoots. The fun part is that you don't need to decide now. You wait, see what you think of them, and decide what to order when you see the photos.
That's the cool part, actually.
I've never before offered minishoots for newborns, so in the past, families of newborns have always had to pay my $750 rate for the "all the JPG files" option after their session. But thanks to our new normal, I'm offering minishoots outdoors for newborns now, so you can own all your JPG files for the $500 rate after the session instead. Yay!
