I have a plan for the way I’m going to work for the remainder of this spring (and likely through the summer, fall.. etc.) and I’m actually pretty excited about it.
To bring some joy into our new, Coronavirus-Aware lives, I am introducing a new kind of session.
Because I want you to have something to be excited about! I'm super excited. I made a video all about them!
Obviously, our lives have all changed so much. We haven’t had our hair colored in forEVER. We haven’t hugged too many of the people we love in forEVER.
Photoshoots for your kids or family might be the last thing on your mind. You probably got a free “Front Steps” photoshoot done by a local photographer to memorialize this crazy time in our lives already (if you haven’t, and you live in my town (Milton), send me an email - I’m running one more round of these in my town to benefit our Milton Art Center).
But time marches on, and I wanted to share how I’ll be documenting families for the foreseeable future.
Social distancing outdoor minishoots
They are what they sound like, and I have to tell you, they’re kind of awesome. We find a time, I drive up outside your house, you guys come outside and we take photos, for 20 minutes, outside the place where you live. I use a zoom lens, I wear a mask, I wear gloves (in case I have to pick up a toy or move a blanket), and I always stay 6+ feet away from you and your family.

FAQs
How much?
They’re $275. The same price as my 20 minute Public Garden Minishoots. You can buy prints/products/individual JPGs afterwards, or lots of people choose to buy all the JPG files for $500 after my minishoots.

What about tiny babies?
Although I know there are challenges with photographing tinies outside, I also know I can do it. I know infants, and I have workarounds for the issues that are bound to come up.
Newborn photos outside are hard, but I have a way to do them that works, and the key is speed. I would love to talk to you about the details of how we do it. My blog post showing a 3 week old's outdoor minishoot is linked here. And another one showing an 18 week old's minishoot is linked here. Here's one from a roofdeck in Southie for a 2 week old. Interested in considering one? Email me for more info.
My 17 years of experience photographing infants + shooting outdoors with families have aligned in perfect synchronicity here and I feel uniquely ready to do this for you. I’d love to talk to you about it more one-on-one. Email me. This is also a crazy cool way to save money and get gorgeous baby pictures this year. I’d be honored if you shared this post with pregnant friends or friends with new babies in the Boston area.

No, I mean really tiny. NEWBORN tiny.
Yup, but trust me, you want someone to do this for you who does this kind of thing all the time. Outdoor newborn photos are not easy, but I would be thrilled to talk to you about doing them for your family. You can see one family with a 5 week old and a 22 month old big sister outdoors at their minishoot from late May here. A 20 day old in his front yard with his parents in June is linked here.

My kids would never pose for pictures. My toddler can't even walk yet. We don't have the right clothes. My yard is awful right now. I don't HAVE a yard.
I can talk and talk about all these things with you. Email me. But first, look at this blog post I just did after a Social Distancing Outdoor Minishoot for a not-yet-walking 1 year old and her 3 year old big brother.

Are you still offering location sessions in other pretty places? My outdoor space is awful, I hate it.
As we get more guidance from our local authorities, I may open up my location shoots in the Public Garden and Turner’s Pond. For now I’m only doing this in families’ personal outdoor spaces. I don’t want to add factors we can’t control into this — so for now I’m only offering these outdoor minishoots in places we (you) can control.
Trust me, though -- I can blur your backgrounds and make the space you think is terrible look pretty awesome for photos. Look at this one year old's social distancing outdoor first birthday minishoot I just did in her back yard. Granted, her family had flowers in the back yard (a unicorn among my clients - it's so rare for families with new babies to have time to garden!)... but I talk a bit about outdoor spaces etc. in this blog post if you want to hear about other recent sessions for families who live in downtown Boston high rises, etc..
And it’s all about your kids and your story right now - my zoom lens is pretty fabulous and I can hide a LOT by shooting right. If everyone in your house is older than one year old *and* you have a place near your home you know won’t be busy with people, send me an email - we can talk about options. Or see below regarding adding a second location and making this an “upgraded mini”.

Can we do a social distancing outdoor minishoot for my maternity session?
Oh my goodness, yes. I hope you will! I love outdoor maternity photos anyway. For now I’m only doing my work in families’ personal outdoor spaces. because I don’t want to add factors we can’t control into this — so I’m only offering these outdoor minishoots only in places we (you) can control. Trust me, though, that even if your yard or outdoor space isn’t awesome, I can blur your backgrounds and make the space you think is terrible look pretty fantastic for photos. And it’s all about your belly right now - my zoom lens is fabulous and I can hide a LOT of stuff in the background by shooting right. Or see below about the “upgraded mini" - adding a second location thing I describe below if you’d like to do two locations for your maternity photos.

We loved the school pictures you took from my son/daughter's nursery school, how are you doing your nursery school picture days now?
Ooh, I'd love to talk to you about being the photographer for your child's Boston-area nursery school. I do this for lots of nursery schools in the area and I'd be honored to talk to your director or any of the parents. Email me. And look at this blog post I just put up after my recent Social Distancing Nursery School Photo Day.
Normally I offer these January-March, indoors-only the nursery school for my participating nursery schools. This year my March schools missed their chance due to the Coronavirus so I did a Social Distancing Nursery School Photo Day for free for fun for all the families at these schools.
Because OMG I LOVE THESE KIDS SO MUCH.
Want to talk about future years and your child's local school? Email me.
Can we do a social distancing outdoor minishoot for my high school junior/rising senior’s “senior photos”?
100% yes. I hope you will! I love my summer sessions with rising seniors and I’d love to make yours special for your soon-to-be-senior this spring or summer. Check that off your list and we can get a few family photos done, too, while we’re at it. Here’s what I usually do at Turner’s Pond for senior photos*.

Can we do a longer session? Can I upgrade to two locations instead of just doing my outdoor space?
Absolutely. I’m introducing an “upgraded mini” option for families who are interested in making sure their backgrounds are just right, and for families who want to make sure I have time to get the more artistic/detail photos they love. For an additional $85 (which would bring your session fee to $360 -- my regular in-home session fee), I will double the shooting time I spend with your family (so you’ll receive a gallery of 40-65 final images from 45-90 minutes of shooting instead of 25-40 from the 20 minute minishoot), and after we’ve done some quick photos outside your space, we’ll all hop in our cars and drive to a second outdoor location near your home. The second location should be a location within 10 minutes drive of your home that you know well and you expect won’t be busy with people. Email me and we can talk more about this option if you’re interested.

What about your Who I Am Project? Is that still happening?
I’m sad to announce that I’ve decided to put this project on hold until January 2021 for now. I normally offer these 2x/year (in January and June), because they take a lot of my time and focus -- managing the questionnaires in addition to taking the portraits in my clients’ tween daughters' bedrooms. Rather than redesigning the project from the ground up, I’ve decided to take a hiatus for the June 2020 sessions and I will re-assess this fall (regarding opening up the January 2021 sessions) when we know more about the virus. Please know that I do have flexibility with my 10-12 yr old age range for this project -- I’ve done it for girls who are 13, 14, 15 years old… so if your daughter really wants one we can absolutely do hers another time in the future when our world has stabilized a bit.
Learn more about the Who I Am Project and sign up to hear about the next round here.
Thanks for reading this, guys. I’m excited to take outdoor pictures with you this year.
Let’s make it happen.
