I hope when people call me up and request a fall leaves family photoshoot at home, that this is what they’re picturing. Because, guys, THIS is totally what I’m picturing. The nice thing about doing a fall leaves family photoshoot at home is being able to jive with the reality of Boston Autumn- we all know it. More on this cold, beautiful reality below.
Fall Leaves Family Photoshoot - Arlington, MA
By the time the leaves are this beautiful, it’s stinkin COLD out there. So the reality is, you want photos without coats, but it’s November and it’s like 28 degrees. Fall leaves appear because it’s cold. And kids get cold, y’know? So when we’re home, (instead of at one of my outdoor minishoots) we can start off indoors, we can play a bit, get used to each other…let 9 year-old big sisters cajole 3 year-old little sisters into some “sitting in a chair” time. (Side note: I have SUCH a soft spot for sisters who are 5-ish years apart in age, since that’s the age difference between me and my sister — I’m the bossy big sister, in case you can’t tell. But I just adore being a fly on the wall in sibling relationships that somewhat mirror my own, because it’s fascinating to imagine that this was the way I was with my sister Lindsay when we were little. But I digress....)
And since it’s a fall leaves FAMILY photoshoot, it’s nice to invite Daddy over for a photo. Even if you promised him he didn’t have to be in this silly photoshoot. Even if he has this project he’s working on and would really prefer to keep going on his project, not pose for a silly photo, and he didn’t dress up at all. Well, that’s even better, I say. It’s perfect. 15 seconds and a big old smile? Annnnnnd done.
So here’s where we get to the fall leaves part of the fall leaves family photoshoot I promised you. And the fact that these girls have a neighbor with some extraordinary swings they’re allowed to use? Total coolness. Love little T’s first swing, when it was a LEETLE faster than she’d hoped. Luckily she warmed up to the swinging as soon as her big sister got involved.
Just perfection. These leaves just kill me.
And then, of course, we can take some time playing in the playhouse in the back yard. Because if you have a playhouse… it must be documented. Also the FALL LEAVES y’all.
But see, when we do our session at home, we can take our time, we can hang out. We can go inside when we get blue fingers from running around outdoors. And we can read some books.
Oh, and guess what Mama was doing in the other room while we were reading our books? She was warming up the hot cocoa! And when you’re nine, you get to put your own whipped cream in. And your little sister thinks you’re the coolest person in the world.
And she can fit the WHOLE spoonful of whipped cream in her mouth. Yup.
