It’s maternity and newborn photos time of year!

So if you’re reading this blog from somewhere other than Boston, you may not be feeling the way we’re feeling about the last few months, but suffice it to say, we Bostonians are DONE with winter. Time to melt, snow. Time to get back to real life, where we go outside and say hi to each other. Where the kids can run around outside on the grass. Show us the grass! We miss the grass.

Although I do recognize that this no-one-running-around-outside thing happens every year over here in BBP-land – and I have to admit I adore it. It’s crazy nutso busy from September 1st through December, and then the holidays happen, and there’s this stillness in the air. It’s quiet in my little office. I turn on the space heater under my desk, I wrap up in scarves and sweaters and I get stuff DONE. In the fall I’m taking photos for 5-6 families a week, and when I dedicate a day to editing each family’s photos, you can see how there’s not much time to do other things related to the business during the fall. Now in January-March, I’m taking pictures for one or two families a week – and it’s divine! I get to just sit here, cozy in my little office, thinking about how to improve and change this year.

Oh, so who calls me for photos in Boston in January-March, you ask? It’s mostly people expecting a baby. :) You guys know I love that. So I get to spend these few months taking indoor warm cozy pictures of mamas waiting for babies to be born and then taking pictures of those babies after they’re born. And what’s better than bellies and teenie babies?

So without further ado, I thought I’d show you some fun ones I got to do in February with Kristen and Dan. First, about a month ago we did ridiculously fun maternity photos in their gorgeous home with amazing windows and light…

Isn’t this the most stylish mirror ever? This was in Kristen’s super cool dressing room with windows all around…

And then a week or so later, little T joined their family. Here she is at just ten days old, gracing us with a little grin:

Two grandmas and a big one year old boy

This big guy was lucky enough to have not just one but two grandmas come over during his photoshoot. What fun! I’ve loved this Baby’s First Year of photos with M – he’s grown so much (see those photos in the background in the flying-in-the-air shot? those are from his newborn and six month shoots!)

He’s just fantastic. On to another year of adventures, dude!

Three munchkins in red

I walked in the door and loved them immediately.  It’s rare that I meet a family for the first time when they’re older – often we start young and continue years and years and years… so when this mama emailed me in November with a completely hilarious message about how she was a surgeon working crazy hours and sure we could never get pictures done in time for the holidays, saying she was sure she was crazy to ever think she could get into my schedule when she only first reached out in mid-November… I felt like it was a challenge.

It was kismet – I’d gotten an email of a cancellation for that very next weekend just an hour or two before, and the message made me belly laugh when I got it – I had to meet them. And then, of course, when I walked in the door – I adored them immediately.  I felt like they were one of my beloved returning families I’d known forever.  They were fabulous, awesome – and the mama was sheepish about the all-red outfits.  But you know what? So what! It looked festive as all get-out. How often do you get to dress your kids up and make them all look alike? They grow up so fast – may as well do this stuff while we can, right?

So here I am again, showing you photos on the blog in color.  You guys have heard it before – I love b&w, and especially when it comes to indoor pictures, I really think b&w looks gorgeous and perfect and gentle and I love the way the light is… but then these guys dress all in red and I just have to blog them in color.  Because, come on now. Check them out.

Right? Adorbs.

PJM - December 18, 2013 - 9:31 pm

These 3 adorable munchkins in red are my niece and nephews! You must be a miracle worker Jessica, because somehow you got them all to smile at the same time, and you captured their unique personalities in the photos. I live in another country but it’s great to see the kids captured in such sweet moments together. Thanks for sharing your work and talents on this blog!

Jessica – how did you do it? I had the misfortune of moving away from this awesome family four years ago, and looking at these pictures I get the full intensity of their incredible, unique personalities gifted to me long distance. Now I’m all verklempt. In a really good way.

Love the photos especially the group family photo.

Winter at the beach

I know January is a funny time to head to the beach in New England, but with the weather we’ve been having, we decided to go for it.  And these guys moved from their city place into a beach-front place, so we had to enjoy some outside time for this big three year old’s pictures.

I have a hard time picking a favorite – I think maybe it’s the one of him dying laughing after smooching his mama… but maybe it’s his rapt attention as daddy tells a story during the Lego building… anyway, can’t go wrong with this cutie pie. Wonderful to see you guys!

A little trip to get some pictures

When your best friend from growing up has her first baby, you just book a flight. And then you have such a great time visiting with her family and other friends that you totally forget to edit the pictures, and the holidays happen, and then it’s January, and then you’re not eating enough because you’re on a “cleanse”, so your editing seems to take forever… wait, but I digress.

I can’t even explain how much my heart burst when I met this little 4 week old person.  I can’t wait to go back for pictures when she’s 6 months old. I adored every minute seeing you guys. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.  I included a bunch of my wonderful host’s children at the end of the blog post too – so there’s loads of bloggy goodness if you click around below.

xo jess

and happy 2013!

Liz - January 9, 2013 - 12:54 pm

I love all of these so much. Could our mutual friend look more beautiful and radiant? I think not.

Chilly day, but warm inside

We spent this whole photoshoot indoors because it was warm and cozy in there – and what’s better than rolling around on the bed, on the couch, just playing.

I have one cuddly picture in here that tells a little story from the editing side of things – and it’s the one of mama on the bed with her two kids squashing up in close with her.  This one is not the crispest photo, and the old Jess – the Jess before she had her own kids, the more technically precise Jess – wouldn’t have approved of it. But the love is just bursting out of this picture – two babies crawling up tight to their mama – I had to keep it.  Because who cares about a little motion blur when the moment just makes your heart melt?

Nursery school photos, third year in a row

It’s that time of the year again – Jan/Feb at Boston Baby Photos means studio-style nursery school photos at my daughter’s preschool, and it was incredible and hilarious once again this year.  Last year I put a post up explaining all the details in case any other schools were interested in having me do this sort of photography at their school, so if you’re interested and want to forward this along to friends, they can learn all the details from last year’s post here.

This time I’ll let the pictures do the talking…

Thanks again for a great day, guys!

Number four, nine days in

When this mama called me to document her fourth baby’s newborn pictures, I was so excited to see his tiny cuteness compared to his big brothers and sisters.  Well Mother Nature conspired against us, and we had to move our shoot day due to all this crazy snow, so only one big two year old brother was home to introduce me to the new arrival…

But that’s OK – he was pretty perfect and ready for his closeup all by himself. Isn’t he handsome?

Pensive.

He got a catnap in there, too.

Wonderful to meet you guys!

Two blondies

If memory serves (and Kristen, correct me if I’m wrong) in 1986, these cuties’ fun blonde mama and I were in a critically acclaimed elementary school production of Sound of Music together. Now it’s 25 (???!!!) years later and I got a chance to meet her fun blonde munchkins last weekend.  It was wonderful from start to finish.

Moments of crazy,

mixed with quiet…

Love this – check HIM out :)

LOVED seeing you again! Keep in touch :)

Three boys and some cookie dough

Got to come back and see these boys again last weekend, and the two older brothers had been joined by a third.  This one of the three of them cracks me up – I feel like it tells such a story :)

We’ll start in the middle, with sweet brother A:

And littlest handsome brother C:

And last but not least, I love this one of big cool brother O:

And littlest brother C gets an upside-down ride from dad:

And a giggle with mom:

And even though big brother O is the oldest brother, I love how little he looks here, reading:

Thinking mama is hilarious:

And this is by far my favorite shot of the day – as the guys get going on their chocolate chip cookie dough, but are stymied by the hard chunks of unsoftened butter:

But it all turned out OK – the whole fam got in on the dough-nibbling action:

Wonderful to see you guys again!

An alliterative post: beautiful, blond boys

No question as to my favorite, favorite picture from this session last weekend – this one of adorable three month old baby D with his lovely mama.  I was kneeling getting pictures of D’s toes, and I saw the sweetest moment happening between the two of them, I had to change my focus a bit.

Big four year old brother T was just perfect:

And just like at my house with my two (same age difference as these two), he gave his brother lots of love ;)

Luckily D thinks T hung the moon:

Giggling with mama:

Handsome, handsome, handsome. Not to mention… dimples!

“My mama is soooo funny.”

This is the toe picture I was getting when the other one from the top of this post happened. Both worth having :)

What a treat to meet you guys, thanks so much for having me out.
