I’ve had a handful of calls recently about maternity photoshoots (yay for summer babies!) and in more than one of the conversations with the mamas-to-be, we got talking about how maternity photos are just so gorgeous, but when you’re hoping to do photos after your baby is born as well, sometimes it’s hard to justify the expense of doing maternity photos. So then I started thinking – what if I offered a maternity minishoot at home? We could just do a quick little 20 minutes… get loads of pictures…
Lo and behold… my at home maternity minishoot was born
Look how well we did!
20 minutes of beautiful moments – remembering this time in their lives. Don’t you think it was SO worth it? And they get a free framed 8×10 print as part of the package.
Which photo should they choose?
(Oh, if you’re curious, I have lots more information about my new at home 20 minute maternity minishoots on this new page of my website.)
In the 20 minutes we got to be indoors and outdoors, two outfits (it was easy to change because she was at home)… just a really sweet way to remember this time before they became a family of three.
Thank you guys so much for letting me pop over and document you guys at our little maternity minishoot. I’m really excited to meet this sweet new babe in July.
Just a couple of years ago I was taking photos of this big two year old girl for her Baby’s First Year series… so imagine how excited I was to hear that she’s going to be a big sister. Her mama told me that she loves to snuggle, so we knew we had to document that before her little sibling arrives…
And document we did!
This photo just melts me. Absolutely melts me.
See you in a few short weeks when baby makes four!
I just emailed this concept to a new mama client the other day and she said it was the best advice she’d received yet. Figured I should share :)
So if you’re reading this blog from somewhere other than Boston, you may not be feeling the way we’re feeling about the last few months, but suffice it to say, we Bostonians are DONE with winter. Time to melt, snow. Time to get back to real life, where we go outside and say hi to each other. Where the kids can run around outside on the grass. Show us the grass! We miss the grass.
Although I do recognize that this no-one-running-around-outside thing happens every year over here in BBP-land – and I have to admit I adore it. It’s crazy nutso busy from September 1st through December, and then the holidays happen, and there’s this stillness in the air. It’s quiet in my little office. I turn on the space heater under my desk, I wrap up in scarves and sweaters and I get stuff DONE. In the fall I’m taking photos for 5-6 families a week, and when I dedicate a day to editing each family’s photos, you can see how there’s not much time to do other things related to the business during the fall. Now in January-March, I’m taking pictures for one or two families a week – and it’s divine! I get to just sit here, cozy in my little office, thinking about how to improve and change this year.
Oh, so who calls me for photos in Boston in January-March, you ask? It’s mostly people expecting a baby. :) You guys know I love that. So I get to spend these few months taking indoor warm cozy pictures of mamas waiting for babies to be born and then taking pictures of those babies after they’re born. And what’s better than bellies and teenie babies?
So without further ado, I thought I’d show you some fun ones I got to do in February with Kristen and Dan. First, about a month ago we did ridiculously fun maternity photos in their gorgeous home with amazing windows and light…
Isn’t this the most stylish mirror ever? This was in Kristen’s super cool dressing room with windows all around…
And then a week or so later, little T joined their family. Here she is at just ten days old, gracing us with a little grin:
It was wonderful getting to know you guys! Thank you so much for having me out for photos. Nothing beats this, truly.
Look at these twinkling eyes! I loved meeting this guy for the first time at my late October Public Garden Minishoot – he and his mama had such fun playing together in the trees and the leaves there. I love it when we’re able to document a soon-t0-be older sibling – it’s a time of life when there’s so much change about to happen… I love being able to spend some time focusing on #1 for a bit. (But maybe that’s just me, speaking as a first child – hehe…)
I know, I know, I always blog my b&w pictures – but I always show everybody all their photos in both color and b&w… and sometimes a photoshoot just blows my mind with its color. Usually it happens with older children, when we’ve been outdoors and running… and this 4 year old dude is no exception. I’ve been taking his pictures since he was mere weeks old – can’t believe he’s FOUR!
I love going where families love to go – these guys live in Scituate by the water, so we were able to start at home, play in the sprinkler and around the yard, and then head over to the beach for some quick lighthouse / beach fun pictures. I don’t consider myself a typical beach photographer – we get different kinds of playing pictures at the beach, not so posey… but the blue sky that day (a week or so ago) just made me so happy. I think it did the same for 4 yr old K and his hermit crab friends. Can’t wait to meet your new little one in a few short months!
Bang for your buck – that’s what I call this. You visited the blog, thought you might get to see pictures of a gorgeous, round, happy belly, and lo and behold, you get two. How lucky are you?
My sister (belly on the right) and brother-in-law are expecting my niece to arrive momentarily (pinch me, I know, right?) and I’m finally getting the time to blog all these belly pictures. Quick before babies arrive! The fun part of this is that one of her bestest friends in the whole wide world is ALSO expecting a baby girl, just a few weeks later.
Since these two girls will inevitably be best friends and in each other’s weddings in a few decades, I was excited be the first to officially photograph them together. We also invited daddies and siblings (be they human or canine, it’s all good), and got piles of pictures of bellies, in all sorts of situations. My favorite, you ask? I think I might like big brother H holding up the bellies in the last shot. But there are loads of fun ones in here. Enjoy :)
You know what’s fun? Showing up at a family’s home after I’ve done maternity pictures for them, and getting to meet the little person who’d been inside that belly. Even cooler? When I get to do it again a second time. I got to visit with 20 month old E this past weekend because his baby sister is arriving soon, and I’d taken pictures of his mama’s belly when he was in there, too. Super cool.
There are so many here that I love – when he lifts his shirt to show us his belly… (we seem to be discussing bellies a lot around here, wanna see mine?), his kiss with his mama, his hand and his feet and his hugs on her belly… the list goes on. Enjoy :)
Wonderful to see you guys again!
This was my first pre-adoption photoshoot! These two fun, wonderful women are going through the adoption process, and one of the requests from the agency was that they create a book about their lives that could be shown to prospective birth mothers. So I got to come in and document their life pre-baby. Kind of like a maternity shoot, only nobody in the pictures happens to be carrying their baby :)
Aren’t they adorable?
And their cool pad, ready and waiting for its newest member…
And we can’t forget big brother Charlie:
Loving these expressions – but also included this to make all the families with young kids out there chuckle… Do you think they know their days reading the paper at the same time are numbered? (I think they have an inkling.)
Fruit salad, of course :)
Go get it, Charlie!
You guys are the best. I loved taking these, and I wait with bated breath for news that your baby has arrived.
I got a message from Hong Kong about this pretty mama – one of her very best friends in the world is literally living on the other side of the world these days and needed to see her Jamaica Plain friend’s big round belly, and what better way than to have me take some pictures?
So, without further ado – these are for Jen… isn’t she GORGEOUS??
This one takes my breath away.
These guys have a house full of kitties, and this one wanted to feel the baby kick. Mama kindly obliged.
Good-natured about it, R told me she’d been terribly sick throughout her pregnancy :( — but along with months of nausea came a rockin’ pregnant bod. I agreed it was important to document the result of all those months of discomfort.
Total goddess, no?
I think they’re kinda excited.
I love the smiles in this one. Thanks for having me come out, guys! Can’t wait to meet baby R :)
It’s been just about two years since I saw this little South End cutie for his (maternity and then) newborn pictures. And now I got to come back and visit for some more belly pictures of his pretty mama and fun daddy, quick before they move out of their place. Can’t wait to meet #2!
There’s something added into this classic shot… wonder if you can spy it…
Love that tongue :)
Such a pleasure to run around with you guys – thanks for having me visit. See you in a few weeks! Yay!
Yay, maternity photos again! It’s been a month or two since I took someone’s belly pictures, and I forgot how much fun it always is. This lovely sweet mama is not only gorgeous, but (see to the right behind her) she’s successfully keeping an orchid alive – something I’ve never been able to do. Apparently the trick is three ice cubes once a week? That’s the perfect amount of water. I have to admit I’m excited to try orchids again with this cool tidbit under my belt.
But back to gorgeous M…
She’s 34 weeks along here – I love the way the light hits her belly on the front right of this picture, just showing exactly how round and smooth it is.
I’m going to let you just look at pictures, I can’t gush too much more about how sweet M is and how fun it was to take her picture. Enjoy :)
Wonderful to meet you!

These two little girls are waiting, waiting, waiting soooo patiently for their little sister or brother to arrive. And I’m going to try a blog post with a lot fewer words. Let’s see how this goes. I feel like the pictures tell enough of a story…
Wait, but just one more thing. Isn’t this a neat family shot, and do you believe Ali (mom) is due in 3 weeks, but still lifting 3 year old L high in the sky? Putting the rest of us to shame, girlie!
These guys were my 3rd Public Garden mini-shoot last Sunday, and I didn’t even know mom was pregnant before we met up there… so exciting! She looked incredible, and big boy B was adorable and ready to have a great time running his little 16 month old legs around the Garden.
The weeping willows tickle the nose when you nuzzle up to them, you know. The things you only figure out when you’re a toddler…
Tickle those toes!
Splash splash —
Congratulations again on your impending arrival, guys!

Three years ago, I took pictures of this little guy in his pretty mama’s belly, and it was so much fun for me to get to see them again, but this time to celebrate his little brother or sister’s impending arrival. Love this tender moment:
A PERFECT circle. No joke. No Photoshop trickery here.
Asking baby questions:
A cuddle for mama:
Handsome, handsome boy.
Pretty mama by the window:
All hands on deck!
Love the wedding photo in the background. Looks like this should be titled “The Story of a Family”
Sweet baby smooches:
And lastly, palming the basketball belly. Wonderful to share this time with you guys again, thanks so much for calling!
