Boston MA Children’s Photographer – an incredible afternoon at the Cradles to Crayons’ 2016 Un-Gala

What a wonderful afternoon I got to have yesterday! There was giving, there was helping, there were volunteering children… there were smiles and there was so much joy. In past years I’ve loved donating my time on international Help-Portrait Day (more info is here), but I couldn’t find a local event in Boston, so when this opportunity presented itself, I was thrilled to be able to donate my time for such an extraordinary event.

I spent the afternoon as one of the volunteer photographers at the Cradles to Crayons 2016 Un-Gala, where over 400 people came, volunteered their time, and made a difference. (And I think the number might have been as much as twice that, since there was a whole 2nd shift of people who came in the morning!)

I’m going to let the photos speak for themselves. My job was to shadow the incredible founder of Cradles to Crayons, Lynn Margherio, and I was honored to spend the day watching her do her thing with her fantastic assistant Patrick by her side.

I have almost 100 photos from the day, though! If anyone would like to look through them or download them, you’re more than welcome to do so — you can find them on my client galleries page.

Thanks for letting me be part of an incredible day. What a great event! - February 19, 2017 - 10:31 am

Howdy! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a collection of volunteers and starting a new project in a community in the
same niche. Your blog provided us beneficial information to work on. You have done a
wonderful job!

The biggest BBP picture ever

Just setting records over here… nbd. This has got to be the biggest Boston Baby Photos picture ever.  You may have even seen it on 93 if you were driving North into the city recently. For about three weeks this photo that I took of two fabulously adorable Ashmont Nursery School kiddos has been rotating through the New England Carpenter’s Training Center’s LED sign. The sign itself is 30 ft x 20 ft high – yowsa! You photo buffs will be interested to learn that the image I needed to send them was not super high res at all – this enormous, gi-huge-ic LED display supports images that are only 400 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall. In photo terms, that’s super low-res. For reference, that’s the same size as the photos here on my blog – not normally high enough resolution for print, let alone display on anything large.  Isn’t that interesting? The other cool fact that photo nerds out there will appreciate? Vertically, the display only depicts every third pixel of the image – it’s just a function of the kind of LED sign it is. I just thought that was super fascinating, wanted to share.

Now here’s a shot from the side of the highway (I pulled over completely, don’t worry – and snapped this with my iPhone from a parked, safe position, I promise):

Now wait, Jess, you ask – what is that photo all about? Well, I’m glad you asked. This Saturday, one of my favorite places in the world, the Ashmont Nursery School, is holding its annual auction to benefit the school’s scholarship fund. This spring I’ve donated two of my 26 minishoots to charity, so even though I’m sold out and have a waiting list for Public Garden minishoots this spring, there’s an opportunity this Saturday to bid on the 11am Sat, 4/27 appointment plus all the high res files. In past years it’s gone for lots less than the $625 face value – you’ll likely get a deal.

Interested? You can either come to the ANS auction (see link below) or you can bid via text during the live auction (Saturday 8-8:30pm). To get in on the text bidding, email me and we’ll set it up.

More minishoot info is here.

And here’s the link to the auction itself.

Help-Portrait Boston, Year 3

For the third year in a row, yesterday I participated in an inspirational day.  The brainchild of celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, Help-Portrait is “a community of photographers, coming together across the world, to use their photography skills to give back to their local community. On or around December 10th, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need, and taking their picture. When the prints are ready, the photographs get delivered. Yep. It really is that easy.”

I volunteered with our local group (find yours by clicking around on the community site here) and met some wonderful people, both in front of and behind cameras.  The Hyde Square Task Force hosted the event at their facility, and we (25+ photographers and volunteers) provided over 100 families who live or have roots within a mile of Jackson Square with portraits over the course of the day.

Attendees were welcomed…

Primped, by volunteers from Empire Beauty Schools:

And then they got to show off their pearly whites… here are just a few of the fantastic people I met:

Then they came downstairs to the spot where another group of fabulous volunteers were printing them an 8×10 and two 4×6’s, as well as burning them a CD of all their pictures to take home.  It was so well organized!  So many team members made it happen, but the most visible on our end were Howard and Jessica – thank you guys for doing TONS of legwork before the event (and I’m sure, late into the night!).  All our team members, send me your websites and I’ll link to you! :)

And our wall of love got bigger and bigger throughout the day.  This picture shows only about half of the families we saw.  Go team! Wonderful to work with you all, so fun to get to see all these smiles.

P.S. This was the first year we got releases from the subjects to show their beautiful faces on our websites – to help get the word out about this event so it can spread to more than the fifty countries it already spread to.  Of course, if any of my gorgeous subjects would prefer I not post their picture here – send me an email and of course I’ll take it down.

P.P.S. For historical perspective, I do have a blog post from the first event I took part in here (I slacked and didn’t do one last year, sorry).

brandy - December 11, 2011 - 10:51 am

SO psyched that you got to show the portraits! I remember your post from a few years ago, and back then I thought — this is so powerful, I wish I could see the results!

Chicken fight!

Just kidding – not really a chicken fight.  But so cute anyway :)

Mama and her handsome little man:

Dad tossing his sweet girl in the air.  Don’t you love the way the light frames her here?

And then a girlie shot:

And one with the men of the house.

So excited to get to know you guys next year at ANS – thanks for a great shoot.  And that’s all folks!  The last of the spring charity 20 minute mini-sessions in the Boston Public Garden.  26 fantastic families, 26 awesome photoshoots.  Hoping to slip one of these mini-session days into my September calendar this fall.  Shoot me an email and I’ll add you to my monthly newsletter to be notified when the date is announced.

These are really great shots! Good stuff.

Grumble, grumble… (kidding)

These two were insanely good at playing together and being subjects of awesome pictures.  So good that at one point I had to pose them as uncooperative subjects.  This picture seemed so unlike them, but it still kinda cracks me up.

They came with their mom for a 20 minute mini-session in the Public Garden on 4/11, and Mom asked me to just take pictures of the boys.  We slipped her into one shot at the end, though, you’ll see :)

Jumping together:

Their expressions here as they play with the bubbles are perfect – little T’s (on the right) lips out in a funny pout:

And a classic cutie shot:

And last, the sweetest mama hug.

Group hug

I know the classic family shot has everybody looking at the camera and smiling, but sometimes there’s a different kind of photo that steals my heart.  This is one of them – of my 1pm family from the Public Garden mini session on the 11th.  LOVE each and every one of these expressions.

But the classic shot has something going for it, too… Even baby K has a sweet smirk in this one:

A toss in the air from Dad:

And this next one needs to be printed big.  It tells such a story, places these girls in time, at a particular age… They’re growing up so fast (maybe I’m projecting – my girls are the same age difference, and my girls are growing up too fast!), and I love this as mom and dad look lovingly at their ladies.

What amazing pictures. Jess does such a great job. What a beautiful family. I am glad we are related. Haha.

Wahoo! Jump, baby :)

So these guys decided to just do kid pictures at their 11:30am Public Garden mini-session on the 11th – and the kids had a great time together.  I love little sister N giggling at her brothers’ antics here:

Aren’t they a handsome crew?

Yup.  Still adorable, crazy faces and all.

Loved seeing you guys – so glad you made it!

First shot, last shot

I so often find that the first shot I take is a real keeper, something neat… but even more often, it’s the last one.  Here’s an example of a last shot that I love, love, love.  These three finished up their family photoshoot and headed to the water to peek at what was going on down there.

This one was one of the first few – see? Another keeper.

Or this one…? ;)

Now Mom and Dad in this family set me a challenge – something I don’t think I’ve been asked to do before.  They have bunches of photos of their kids together, but not many of the two of them, and even fewer of the two of them highlighted in a photo where their kids are also part of the shot.  So we had our shoot’s goal: a shot of mom and dad where the parents are highlighted, but the kids are in it, in the background almost…  I like this one, with their sweet hairbows…

Or this one – with a giggly foursome in the background.  You guys are adorable!

Zooming around the Garden

This was my fourth mini-shoot on the 11th in the Public Garden – and these three were awesome.  Don’t you adore 3 year old L’s expression as he races his big brother and sister?

If you look quickly, this one almost looks like these guys are wading in the pond, doesn’t it? I don’t think their smiles would be quite so relaxed if they were.  It was 10:30am and there was still a bit of a chill in the air :)

Three cuties in a tree:

Cool dude, borrowing dad’s shades.

They genuinely had fun together, even when their sister squeezed them tight:

It was such fun seeing you guys, thanks for coming out for pictures, and thanks for supporting Ashmont Nursery School.

Daddy and his girls

This Daddy and I have known each other for… oh no, seriously? (as I count on my fingers) this can’t be right.  23 years? What am I, filing for social security or something?  Well, we’ve been friends since middle school, and now he has a gaggle (well, three) beautiful, awesome girls making up his family.  This one’s my favorite, as the girls begin a chicken fight, unbeknownst to their parents…

They were my 10am family for the Public Garden shoot a few weekends ago, and I love the family shots we got.

This one should be printed huge and hung in the front hall or something…

Handsome crew:

It was great to see you guys as always, thanks for the fun shoot!

Two lovely ladies at the Public Garden

This marks the first of a dozen or so Public Garden sessions from last weekend that I’ll be blogging over the next couple of weeks.  Sunday was such an incredible day for photos, I had such a great time getting photos of all these families playing together in the gorgeous Garden. This first mama and her daughter met me bright and early, at 9am, and the Garden was relatively deserted.  It was also still a bit chilly, but they were troopers.  I love this, by the water:

Beautiful big girl R, complete with funky flower headband:

Mama and her sweet on the Make Way for Ducklings statue together:

A little running around, Hancock tower in the background:

Flying in the air:

A girlie hug:

And lastly, some giggles by the gorgeous flowers.  Wonderful to see you guys!

Yippeee!  Not that I’m competitive or anything, but I was so excited to learn that Boston Baby Photos was the top fundraiser in’s Have a Heart for Haiti fundraiser earlier this month! (OK, maybe I’m a little competitive. But this is the best thing to be competitive about, isn’t it?) So exciting.

You guys helped me raise $341.30 for UNICEF, who is absorbing administrative costs so that 100% of donations go directly to children in Haiti.

Last day of Have a Heart for Haiti campaign

Today’s the last day for 10% of your Boston Baby Photos purchase to go to UNICEF through the Have a Heart for Haiti campaign.  So go online, place a print order, order JPGs, order your gift certificate for a shoot later in the year… anything ordered by midnight tonight qualifies.  I’ll do the rest.

For more information about the campaign with, you can see my earlier post.

And thank you!

Gorgeous, gorgeous. Love Eva’s expressions are priceless. My favorite is Eva’s plotting to devour Joanne’s necklace.

Have a Heart for Haiti Campaign

Starting tomorrow, February 1st, through February 15th, I’m running a donation campaign with Christine Koh of where I will donate 10% of all Boston Baby Photos sales to UNICEF for Haiti relief. So if you haven’t ordered pictures from an old (perhaps expired?) photoshoot, now’s your chance… I am happy to reopen the gallery for you for free for a few days.  Or if you’ve been meaning to order a gift certificate, now’s the time! You don’t need to do anything special – just place an order by 2/15 and 10% of the order total will go to UNICEF.
