Westfield NJ newborn photos with her big sister

On Friday after school my kids and I hopped in the car in Milton, MA and grabbed my husband from work so we could drive down to Westfield, NJ to (finally) take newborn photos of my beloved college roommate’s new baby.

newborn photos with her big sister

A busy time of life: but still time for newborn photos

They’re deep in it, guys. You can picture it — they have a 22 month old and a 2 month old. They’re busy! But this also means they’re card-carrying members of that elusive, ephemeral club that I love to document: the two under two club.

We’re talking that time of life when you’re feeding the newborn and you have to call out to the twenty-two month old and suggest she wait to go up the stairs until she has someone with her… it’s a lot.

But I’m so grateful that we took the time to do these newborn photos! Photos are so precious when we’re able to do them at this time of life — so we can remember the way big sister was so loving with her baby sister… the kisses on the top of her head, the gentle pats B gave M… just so much love.

Love just bursting, bubbling, oozing out of them, all the time. Joy, love, gratitude… they have all of it in spades.

newborn photos with her big sister

I adored meeting miss M, and loved seeing big sister B. And they even indulged me and let me do a wall consulting meeting while I was there! May as well peek at frames and talk about what to hang where when we’re shooting pictures, right? Why not?

Everybody welcoming a sweet new girl

This sweet pumpkin has so much love surrounding her! She was nine days old when we took these photos, and her big 4 1/2 year old sister and her big 2 1/2 year old brother just showered her with attention for the whole photoshoot.

Also, I so often blog my newborn in-home sessions in black and white, I wanted to change it up for you here – every session I shoot is always provided to my clients in both black and white and color, but I sometimes forget to blog the color shots so you can see the cuties’ pink cheeks too.

Squishable sisters

When you have a two year old at home and you bring home a newborn, sometimes you just have to throw the two year old up in the air. It’s necessary, people. #andalsosuperfun

The sweetness that big sister A feels toward her new sister T is just palpable – I adored it…

She is pretty perfect:

The intensity of the sisterly love was pretty hilarious, actually ;)

Always wanting to squish and squeeze her… (But actually, T didn’t seem to mind a bit.)

Wonderful to see you guys again – so excited for another Baby’s First Year package with you!

Mama and her big girl

Just a couple of years ago I was taking photos of this big two year old girl for her Baby’s First Year series… so imagine how excited I was to hear that she’s going to be a big sister. Her mama told me that she loves to snuggle, so we knew we had to document that before her little sibling arrives…

And document we did!

This photo just melts me. Absolutely melts me.

See you in a few short weeks when baby makes four!

Mary Rooney-belmonte - March 8, 2016 - 7:16 pm

Love these photo’s! They are the Best!!!

Louise Belmonte - March 9, 2016 - 9:30 am

Beautiful! Thank you.

A tiny sister joins them

I got to document this tiny girl last week when she was just eight days old. She’s a perfect four pound peanut, and her big sister is so incredibly loving and kind toward her new baby sister.

The girls:

And her big canine brother is extraordinarily gentle with her too – he even let her take a nap right on him.

Snoozy smile:

And not to be outdone – a fabulously fun and amazing big sister:

I adored meeting you guys!

A sister who loves to giggle

After a bit of winter cold rescheduling, we finally got these guys documented! 6 year old H and 3 year old W welcomed their new baby sister E in mid-September, and we got to get pictures when she was just about two months old and grinning and giggling up a storm. I’ll let the pictures do the talking, but suffice it to say I adored playing with these guys. And yikes, the picture by the window is killing me with its quiet sweetness.

Welcome sweet boy

With a four year old big brother and a 22 month old big sister, little new 2 week old N is getting lots of love. They really are extraordinary with him – just so loving. I really like the crazy family pictures from this shoot – just a little slice of what life is really like these days :)

Big brother and big sister enjoying their baby bro

I have to apologize, I have WAY too many that I love from this session.  When this mama got in touch with me, she told me about her incredible 12 and 10 year olds.  That they were wonderful big siblings to her new six month old little guy – and that she wanted to document it.  And I’m just adoring the way we did.

Loving these hands and feet:

Now this one is also perhaps my favorite from the session – not sure:

We should do introductions… this lovely girl is ten:

And this handsome guy is twelve:

And this cutie is six months:

Loving that mama:

With their pup – catching some air:

And a couple of classic shots – the three:

And the five:

And last but never least, I adore this from the end of the shoot, when baby D was getting tired:

Thank you Kate for sharing these photographs…we love them and you have a beautiful family (and Kay said really nice family too)!! :) Hope to see you soon.

Two years apart, and she really IS good with him

People will often tell me how great their two year olds are with their new siblings, and it’s often true – there’s this wonderful fascination a two year old has with the baby who’s joined the family.  Their fascinated moments are often brief, though, and transition into more dangerous ones (squashing, poking… just general baby endangerment – all parents are familiar with it).  So it’s up to me to capture those brief moments of fascination.  This photoshoot was really fun for me because big 2 year old sister S (whom I met almost exactly two years ago for her newborn pictures) really loved investigating her new brother A.  She was curious and loving throughout the session…

But we did get to spend time with just S at the beginning:

And then A joined us:

Grinning right away with Daddy:

And gazing adoringly at S:

And a lovely, gentle look at his mama.  What a handsome boy!

We even got three generations of ladies:

With the blanket in her mouth – her most comforting lovey (which was purchased two years ago for her first photoshoot – I love stuff like that):

And one last squeeze of the hand before I let you go.  What a treat!

Marjorie - March 1, 2012 - 9:11 pm

This as as heartwarming as it gets. What fabulous pictures! Thanks so much for sharing. Your children are simply beautiful.

Big sister love

You guys, this is one of those ones that would look so neat printed big up on the wall in your bedroom!  I love this sweet sweet moment.

They already have such a great time together :)

S loves to help A when he’s taking off his jammies (and apparently he loves it too):

Loved seeing you guys again!

New brudda, with stinky feet

E checked out her new brother B’s toes, and confirmed – p.u.! Or maybe not, but at least it made her giggle.  E is just 25 months older than her now one month old brother – so they narrowly missed membership in my exclusive two under two club – but I think maybe we can grant them honorary membership for a bit.

Especially when hangout time with the two of them includes moments like this:

And a few of just the little dude:

He looks SOOO much like his sister in this next one:

Loved seeing you guys! xo

Dear Jen and Peter, Thanks for sharing your photos. Your camera artist did a great job once again. The children are just beautiful. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. God bless you all. Love, Patty & Uncle Greg

Jim Johnson - November 2, 2011 - 3:47 pm

Jen and Peter: We were thrilled to see the photos of Emma and Benjamin. Your friend Jess is an excellent photographer. She caught the beauty of the children in their natural environment. I feel like I visited your home even though I’m 1,500 miles away. Love to you and Peter and your family. Great Uncle Jim

Heather Norton - November 3, 2011 - 2:01 pm

Love these pics! I always love checking out your site and seeing some familiar faces :) JJ, you look great – and your little ones are absolutely adorable. Nice job, Jess! :)

Amanda - November 7, 2011 - 9:26 pm

After having no power in CT for 10 days, it was a treat to see such adorable photos while digging through emails. E and B are beautiful children and lucky to have each other and their wonderful mom and dad! Jess, you capture great memories!

Swinging and dimples

Are you kidding me with the matching grins?  And he’s only 4 months old.  Wait, even better – she’s only TWO.  Love, love, love this.

Once we got outside this peanut hopped up on the BIG GIRL SWING (yes, you read that right) and proceeded to swing all the way up to the clouds, like the adventurer she obviously is.  Don’t you love how tiny she is against this huge swingset? Ringlets flying.

Wonderful to see you guys as always!

These pictures make me so happy. They really capture the fun and we can do anything of the R Family. Sweetest girls ever. If I wasn’t an adult, I’d beg them to adopt me.

Anzi, perfidamente Cacciari dice “contenere”… Avete capito?!

http://www./ - February 8, 2017 - 11:58 pm

Hey, that’s a clever way of thinking about it.

Another gorgeous girl joins the family

I met big girl T a few years ago when she was just a few weeks old, and her sister C joined the family just a week before our photoshoot,  so I got to do another newborn shoot with these guys.  Isn’t she beautiful?  This lovely lady even smiled :)

Her big sister T still wasn’t quite sure what to make of her…

Checking out the toes…

T got to do some fun jumping on the Rody…

Pointing out her ears…

Wonderful to see you guys again!

Fourth newborn shoot!

I’m so lucky that these guys came back from Arizona for a visit!  They had their first son seven years ago and were living in the Boston area.  We took sweet pictures of him when he was just three weeks old.  Then they moved, but when their second son was just three weeks old, they visited Boston (correct me if I have any specifics wrong, guys – I have a terrible memory) and we got to do pictures at their grandma and grandpa’s house.  Then again for their daughter we did three week old pictures a couple of years later.  Now I got to meet their fourth beautiful baby, take pictures in a sink bath of this little perfect girl – not to mention grabbing a few of all four hanging out together.  Because isn’t this the picture you want printed really huge on a wall somewhere?  I LOVE.

Actually, it’s a toss up.  I might want this one really big if these were mine…

OK, ok, I’ll stop with the body parts. Too much fun.  This one tells a great story, too…

And Ms. J even took her hat off for a few brief moments…

But sorry, OK, back to the matter at hand.  Newborn pictures (at 3 months old as opposed to her siblings’ 3 week old newborn pictures — but c’mon, cut us some slack, here, we’re talking cross-country travel with FOUR kids… the fact that she’s not three years old is beyond impressive to me) so newborn pictures of littlest lady B. Each of them always got a sink bath in their newborn pictures, so Ms. B is no different.  Loving the layout and lighting and expression and clenched fists of this one…

And this one tells a cool story, too.

She loved mama time after her bath.

And daddy giggles too.

And like a dreamy little fourth baby, she fell promptly to sleep after her bath.  What a love!

One tiny asleep foot to top things off.

Wonderful to see you guys again. Are you sure you’re not having more? You make such great ones…

As the mom of those beauties, I can’t thank Jess enough for those pictures! We originally went to Sears, what a waste of money. I thought it would be impossible to get a photo of all of them looking in the same direction, never mind looking good but Jessica is magic with the kids. I have to choose between pictures! You are so good at what you do!

kate - August 3, 2011 - 1:04 pm

beautiful pictures of beautiful babies!! nice work to mom jessica and photographer jessica!!! love the 1st one with all the piggies and the one of the two sisters best!!

Courtenay - August 13, 2011 - 1:48 am

What a GORGEOUS family, god you two make some serious cutie-patooties!!! And Juliet with that hat on, what a riot! All the pics are fabulous but I am truly in love with the first one…a family of free spirited kiddos with feet in the air, what better describes a fun filled care free childhood?!? Runner up…the last one. How in the world did you get them all to cooperate? The photographer certainly does work magic!

Jennifer - August 13, 2011 - 11:36 am

Beautiful! The lighting in the one of J and B is amazing – how did you get Miss J to stay still long enough to capture that? I love body part pictures but have to ask what body part of B’s are the hands on in the second one. My children are convinced that it is B’s rear end ;-).

Mike - August 13, 2011 - 12:28 pm

What incredible pictures! Amazing to get all 4 in one place and looking at the camera at the same time! I love the “feet” picture!
