OK guys, the white board on the door of my office tells me I'm really heading toward the finish line!
Tonight was a big milestone, I got down to single digits in my "left to shoot + edit" (so I have 4 family photoshoots left to photograph and edit and 5 others I've already shot that still need editing, which means a total of 9 left in 2017!)
Now that the finish line is in sight, I always try to use the first weekend in December as my "let's do some charity" weekend. It's that time of year, you know? Where you want to do something nice? Give back... do something for someone else...
For many years for me (and for lots of my photographer friends all over the world) the first weekend in December has been dedicated to being part of the Help-Portrait movement. The idea behind Help-Portrait is:
1. Find someone in Need
2. Take their Picture
3. Print their Picture
4. Deliver their Picture
So that's been wonderful. I've blogged about it some of the years, and then last year I couldn't find a local Help-Portrait event so I spent the day photographing at Cradles to Crayons' UnGala, which was fantastic as well.
And along those same lines...
When my friend Bill, of Shoefly Studios, sent me a message a couple of months ago asking if I wanted to go volunteer in Houston taking photos for families who lost their family photos in Hurricane Harvey on that first weekend in December, I got really excited.
Our other friend Sharon Reiley (Reiley Photography) was thrilled about the idea as well, so we all booked our flights and got ourselves some hotel rooms. We had some exciting Skype planning sessions with Mike Fox and other photographers (they're the ones who are doing all the heavy lifting in Houston) - and now we can't wait to get ourselves there and see how we can help.
Because we're leaving tomorrow, guys! Bill, Sharon and I are getting on a plane and heading to Houston. We're going to be part of Focusing Forward.
The event is this
Saturday, December 2nd,
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, many Houston-area families lost everything, including their family portraits. But Mike Fox, a photographer in Houston, had an idea. He reached out to photographers all over and asked us to come -- come help make some new memories for these families.
Now here's where you come in. Last I heard we have 85 families signed up, but there are still spots available for families to have their portraits taken. Know someone in the Houston area who could really benefit? More information about the event is here.
I'll be posting updates up on my Instagram all weekend, and I'll let you guys all know how it goes!
I'm Jessica McDaniel, and May 2017 marked my 14th anniversary photographing babies and their families all around Boston.
