A three week old beauty

Thanks to Jury Duty and my trusty laptop, I got to work on these sweet pictures this morning (thank heavens for grandmas who watch my girlies)… And no worries, I was excused (the judge took pity on me when I explained that I have a nursing baby at home), so no delays on people’s pictures!

Little baby R had the teeniest little toes – look at ’em: Aren’t they adorable?

And she apparently already had a sense of humor:

We caught a few smiles:

And some loving mama time:

I love how her little eyes are squinched up in this one. Don’t worry, sweetheart!

She was just so alert and lovely – it was a pleasure to get to spend time with her!

We happen to know Baby R's Mama and Daddy but haven't gotten to meet the new little one yet — thank you for sharing these beautiful pictures of a beautiful family!

Running on the porch

I met big sister O back when she was a chubby cutie, and now she’s a big tall girl of almost three. Her little brother is 16 months old, and they loved running around together:

Two times the cuteness

These guys are 10 months old and full of energy! Their parents got a gift certificate a while back and decided to use it now, in time for the holidays.

I wasn’t sure I could tell them apart, but after working on their pictures, I think I’ve got it now. Pretty proud of myself :)

Knuckles with dimples are my very favorite.

And they didn’t want to be shirtless. It was incredible to see how similar their upset times where… they were completely in sync. Tough for their hard working parents – but amazing to see.

And the same position calmed both of them down. Isn’t it amazing?

Rolls and eyelashes

This big handsome boy was incredible with his rolls and his eyelashes! He’s only 3 1/2 months old – the same age as my Sadie. So fun to start taking pictures of babies who are the same age as my second girlie…

So adorable!! I love the pictures of him on the white blanket, he looks so peaceful and cozy.

And- great expression looking out the window. Very cute!

Seven years later

“No fair!” you cry. “You’re blogging this family’s photos mere hours after you shot them?” I know, I know. No fair. But see, the beauty behind the first (cool, right?) photo you see here (we’ll call her Ms. M, for the purposes of the blog) was one of the first few babies I ever took pictures of. She, and her friend Ms. E (not pictured) were my first muses… the reason I started photographing children. It was seven years ago, I was fresh out of an MBA program, holding my degree in my hot little hand, knowing I wanted to find some way to start my own business, but not sure what to do. I was dating a great guy, and his friends were starting their families… and the little books of black and white photos of their children that I’d been making had been something of a hit. So I went for it. Business plan, and… go! Boston Baby Photos was born. Now it’s seven years later, I’m married to that great guy, we have two gorgeous girls of our own, and this business manages to make me smile every day.

So when you’ve got that kind of history with me, you get to jump the line a bit and get (at least your blog post) done right away. (The rest of the pictures will be done in a couple of weeks, guys, sorry – trying to still be a bit fair to everybody else.)

But for now, I had to at least show you these.
How cool is this? Ms. M is a lovely lady of seven and a half (nearly eight) now, and she obligingly made this photo with me. I’m digging it.
5226 by you.

A little history? I’ve stopped doing these “see what they looked like when they were tiny” examples in the blog, because digging out the old photos was taking me too much time… but I thought Ms. M deserved it. Look at those knuckles!
5198 by you.

And now she has two beautiful sisters… they had a blast playing in the water today.
5252 by you.

And their parents were troopers when I suggested they sit their wet little butts down in laps. But it worked! :)

The little ones get their big sister:

The divine Ms. C – now five years old!
5144 by you.

And what happens when you ask the three year old to fill up the pool? Maybe some of the water actually makes it there….
5236 by you.

And here she is, the lovely Ms. S – the best expression!
5111 by you.

OK, sorry to tease all these and then make you wait weeks for the rest, but I was excited to peek through them and I had to honor my little muse. Thanks again for having me back. See you guys soon!

10 day old tiny toes

Last Saturday I had three newborn shoots in a row – this was my 3rd one of the day. I love little patterns in my schedule… and before I tell you about this wonderful family, I had to share. (You can scroll down the blog to see the other two newborns from that day.) So my first shoot was with a two week old baby, and there were two children in the family. Then my second shoot was with a three week old baby, and there were three children in the family. And now this last shoot of the day was a ten day old baby, (no… they didn’t have ten children!) but if I round down to one week, they fit my little pattern because just had one baby in their family. OK, too much talk, not enough pictures. Sorry :)

These guys were given a gift certificate for their first shoot by a great friend (a.k.a. Auntie Kath), and I’m so excited to show them all the pictures! Here’s a toesie kiss. Look at those tiny legs!

And cradled in dad’s bicep, showing off his own bicep :)

And I always know when I’m in a mellow dog family when they let their pup (the first baby) give the new baby smooches. Now that’s true love.

I love how tiny he looks here on the bed, legs crossed:

And that startle reflex that goes away so quickly! Glad we caught it here.

See that Dad is holding the binkie in this shot? Can you just hear the *POP* noise it made as it was extracted from C’s mouth?

So great to meet you guys. Hope to see you again soon! Thanks again, Auntie Kath!

How am I suppose to get any work done when I'm going to be staring at the pics all day?!

Jess, as always, beautiful shots. You are so talented, by friend.

And this baby? Well, I might be biased but he's one hell of a looker! I can't wait to see the rest of the shots!

Amazing photos of an amazing family. xoxo

3 weeks old: Third time’s a charm

This is the third time I’ve visited this family when a child of theirs is 3 weeks old. And she was a charm! How cool to see their babies at this exact stage, one after another. This time I met their first girl, baby J, while her two older brothers went off to a water park with their dad. I missed seeing them, but of course I understood the lure of the park…

Strong neck, as she peeks at her mama:
3661 by you.

And smiling already! Obviously brilliant.
3497 by you.

We have this same picture of one (if not both) of her brothers. Had to snap the yawn again.

And we always do bath pictures in the sink with these guys… some of my favorite moments with little ones are when they’re getting bathed.

And again with the neck control!

Jess – I think this is my favorite picture I’ve had of you from all the shoots – you just look so serene and calm here. Must be that mom-ming of 3 suits you. :)
3634 by you.

And the two happy girls…

So incredible to get to share this time with you guys again. I hope the move plans have come together, and that you’ll come back to Boston someday for #4’s pictures!

Jewel Imaging - August 20, 2009 - 4:54 pm

These are beautiful. I love the last one… they both look so peaceful and happy! And the yawn shot is a classic.

18 months old and 2 weeks old – and doing so well

I was so impressed with big girl T – she is just starting to figure out this big sister thing, and she’s doing a great job of it. At only 18 months old, she’s only had a couple of weeks to get used to her new brother S, and she was really wonderful with him:
3413 by you.

First of all, though, isn’t he a handsome devil? I also love the quilt in this shot – cool leaf pattern!
3365 by you.

And pretty girl T:
3270 by you.

I feel like this is the picture I wish I had of myself just after my 2nd was born. Shanna (mom) looks so sweetly welcoming as big sister crawls across the bed toward her baby brother. I always feel like I’m telling my older daughter to be careful of her sister. I want Shanna’s expression to be what my girls remember of me instead!
3345 by you.

Shhh, baby brother. I’m trying to watch Handy Manny.
3306 by you.

Scout’s honor, I haven’t retouched any of these pictures. Doesn’t Shanna look amazingly well rested for a mom of two under two?

I love the expressions on the girls here:

And baby girl makes five

I went to college with both the mom and the dad in this family, and I was so excited to finally meet their three beautiful children last week.  I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to meet them!  Here’s the gorgeous baby A with her pretty momma:

Welcoming a boy into the crew

I’ve been taking pictures of these guys since big girl A was just a babe (do I start too many blog posts this way? I’m sorry, I just LOVE this part of my work – seeing babies grow)…

But we saw the arrival of little sister R, and various xmas photos along the way… and now big boy B has grown and grown and I finally got to see his cuteness this past weekend.  Look at the grins on the three of them!

1800 by you.

Since we were mostly celebrating B’s arrival with this shoot, we got to spend some special quiet time taking pictures of just him (his tongue and hair are the best):

And his big loving sisters can’t get enough of him:
2145 by you.

Some quiet mommy time:

And giggling Daddy time:

And a little non-traditional family shot.  The girls had to show me their dance moves.  They’ve got style! :)  Can’t wait to show you the rest of the pictures.  It was wonderful to meet your little guy, thanks for having me back :)

I also like the first photo the best. Lovely smiles, beautiful kids. Mr. B is a delight.

A visit from Milwaukee

I was so happy to find out that these guys were visiting from Milwaukee and wanted a photoshoot while they were here. Little tiny baby J isn’t quite 3 months old here, and her big brother B is a big boy of two. Aren’t they so sweet together?
1577 by you.

But see, when you’re two, you don’t want to stay lying like that for long :) J thought B’s rollaway move was pretty cool.

Anonymous - August 12, 2009 - 1:07 pm

Beautiful pictures, beautiful subjects. Pictures capture the pure essence of innocence.

Anonymous - August 12, 2009 - 1:29 pm

Beautiful photos of adorable kids! I love the composition of the first photo. And big brother's mischevious smile while little sis looks so calm is just precious!

Popsicle calm

My friend Mary talks about the magic of popsicles, and their elusive power over her children. She calls that time after you hand your children the popsicles, when all the crying stops – she calls it “popsicle calm”. I love it, because now I think of it every time I use popsicles to save the day at my house.

Now these guys didn’t really even need popsicles to fix a bad mood or anything, but they were just so incredibly cute with their melty messy faces.

I have to admit I love breakdown pictures – it’s terrible of me, I know. But it’s so great how quickly they come in and out of these kinds of breakdowns. I don’t remember what big boy B had done to the poor maligned P here – but she was better quickly, don’t worry.

And this lovely mama Erin asked, as I was leaving, if I thøught the line below her belly button (a.k.a. linea nigra – which, yes, I had to google in order to figure out the spelling) would show up in the photos. I gave her my usual answer to this question, which is, “Oh, I can edit it out if you don’t like it…” and I loved her response… “Oh, no, I’m hoping you will be able to see it. I think it’s cool. I feel like it looks like a seam.” :)

And this one I’ve seen done, I can’t remember where, probably or somewhere… and so had Erin. She described it to me, and I knew what she meant. I don’t usually bring props, but she said she didn’t have blocks for her baby yet — come on, no blocks?! poor child is going to be needing those momentarily! :) But I said no problem, I’d bring some of my daughters’ blocks for this shot. But then when I went digging through the toys, I could only find one B block. So I brought a lowercase d, and promised her I’d fix it in Photoshop. Gotta love digital photography!

What a fun shoot! Great to meet you guys. Can’t wait to meet your little one in a few weeks.

Welcome sweet boy, ten days late

This fantastic couple finally gave birth to a bouncing baby boy in early July (we had to reschedule our newborn shoot… he hadn’t arrived in time for our first appointment!). But they waited patiently for his arrival, and then I went on my month of maternity leave in July and they were so nice about waiting for me to return for their newborn shoot. Thanks for accommodating my schedule, guys. Now, this past Sunday when we had our shoot, he’s almost 4 weeks old and just gorgeous!
